There are mounting signs that France, the eurozone’s second-largest economy, is also being dragged into the crisis. France’s 10-year notes jumped 23bp to yield 3.62 per cent – a record 187.9bp above comparable German Bunds.

“It’s like watching a slow-motion train crash,” a senior London-based banker said. “This is a year many will want to forget. No one wants to put on risk. We need ECB [European Central Bank] support, but the ECB is saying no.”
