The Iran Sanctions Enhancement Act, introduced by a bipartisan group of US senators, states in its preamble that its purpose is "to enhance US diplomatic efforts with respect to Iran by expanding economic sanctions against Iran to include refined petroleum, and for other purposes". Coinciding with an Iran-focused annual conference of the powerful pro-Israel lobby group, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), over the weekend, the purpose of this pending legislation is to provide "a powerful new weapon to use against Iran", to paraphrase Democratic Senator Evan Bayh, one of its sponsors.
Another key sponsor, Senator Joseph Lieberman, has also referred to it as "another stick" and, according to reports in the US media, has solicited the approval of the Obama administration's point man on Iran, Dennis Ross, who is touring the Persian Gulf region to whip up support for the US's diplomacy on Iran. He is an avid supporter of the "tougher sticks rather than carrots" approach toward Iran.
Jeg er ved at tro, at Obama faktisk ikke helt forstår, hvad der foregår omkring ham. Han tager åbenlyse politiske risici i sine taler og udmeldinger, om samhørighed og retsorden og alt det pjat, som den amerikanske højrefløj ikke tøver med at udnytte, mens hans administration ser ud til direkte at modarbejde Obamas erklæringer.
Eller også forestiller han sig måske, at hans fine taler om samhørighed faktisk er alt, der bør skulle til, jf. DC's surrealistiske politiske virkelighed og Obamas urokkelige tro på egen overtalelsesevne. Iran er ikke dog ikke imponeret og udbeder sig reelle ændringer. Hvilken frækhed.
Jeg tror stadig mest på, at der hverken er hoved eller hale på udenrigspolitikken. Som på alt andet i øvrigt.
